The full system under the shingle

Here is the part most homeowners never see and most quotes never spell out: the shingle is only the top layer. What keeps water out of your house is the system underneath, and that is where roofs are won or lost. A premium shingle over a weak system still leaks, so we build the whole assembly, not just the surface.

• Underlayment: a quality moisture barrier over the whole deck, under the shingles, as the second line of defense against wind-driven rain.
• Ice-and-water at the vulnerable spots: self-sealing membrane in valleys, around penetrations, and at eaves where water tends to back up and work in.
• Flashing: proper metal flashing at chimneys, walls, valleys, and every place two surfaces meet. Bad flashing, not bad shingles, is behind most leaks we are called out to fix.
• Ridge venting: balanced intake-and-exhaust ventilation so your attic breathes, which keeps the deck dry and the roof from cooking and rotting from underneath.
• Stainless coastal detailing: near the ocean we use stainless components so fasteners and metal do not rust out years before the shingles wear, which is what we see on coastal roofs built with standard hardware.

Coastal and valley considerations

We roof two pretty different worlds. On the coast, from Newport down to Coos Bay, the enemies are salt air, strong gusts, and wind-driven rain, so stainless detailing, careful flashing, and proper sealing earn their cost. Inland through the valley, from Roseburg up to Albany, it is wet winters, hot-dry summers, and the shade and moss that come with big trees, so the algae-resistant shingle, good ventilation, and trimmed-back branches do the heavy lifting.
